Who We Are
DanceWest is the dance arts program at West Anchorage High School, providing students with the opportunity to train, create, and perform original dance works as part of a comprehensive arts education.
Rooted in technique, collaboration, and creative exploration, DanceWest offers students a space to develop as artists while building confidence, discipline, and a strong sense of community.
A Legacy of Dance at West High
DanceWest was founded in 1990 at West Anchorage High School with the goal of establishing a dedicated dance program within the Anchorage School District. Under the leadership of longtime educator and choreographer Lori Bradford, the program grew from a small set of classes into a cornerstone of West High’s performing arts offerings.
Over nearly three decades, the program developed a strong tradition of annual productions, original choreography, and student-centered performance opportunities. Students were actively involved not only as performers, but also in the creative and production process—learning the value of collaboration, commitment, and artistic ownership.
DanceWest quickly became known within the school community as more than a class. It became a creative home—a place where students felt supported, challenged, and empowered to express themselves through movement.
Growth, Transition, and Continuity
In 2017, DanceWest marked an important milestone as Lori Bradford retired after 27 years of leadership. That same year, Irenerose Castillo stepped into the role of DanceWest instructor, continuing the program’s legacy while guiding it into a new chapter.
Under continued leadership, DanceWest has remained committed to its core values: artistic excellence, student voice, and inclusive community. The program has expanded opportunities for performance, collaboration, and dance film creation—allowing students to explore movement both on stage and on screen.
Recognition & Impact
West Anchorage High School was named a National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Performing Arts School of Excellence in 2022, recognizing the strength and impact of its arts programs. DanceWest has been highlighted as a key contributor to this distinction, reflecting its long-standing commitment to quality arts education.
Through performances, films, and community engagement, DanceWest continues to play an essential role in shaping West High’s creative culture and inspiring generations of student artists.
